Recovering Data from a Failed 4-Disk Netgear NAS: A Case Study

A client's NAS system experienced a power outage that resulted in damage to the device and corruption of the RAID data. With 4 1TB disks configured in a RAID 5 setup, the client reached out to Precision for an emergency service.

Why NAS Devices are Popular for Businesses

NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices have become a popular choice for businesses due to their large storage capacity and the safety provided by a RAID 5 setup. In a RAID 5 configuration, if one disk fails, the RAID can continue to operate without any data loss, making it one of the most widely used server storage topologies.

Diagnosis and Recovery

Upon arrival at the Precision lab, the NAS was diagnosed with faults in the casing and corruption in 2 of the 4 internal hard drives. This caused general corruption in the RAID 5. To recover the data, Precision worked to get 3 of the drives back in working order and pieced the data back together using the Netgear NAS RAID 5 configuration.
